Legal Consequences of Sex Addiction
Sexual addiction has financial, emotional, relational, and potentially legal consequences. Sexual addiction is different for each addict, but the following factors often contribute to sex addiction:
- Poor coping skills
- Sexual trauma
- Psychological challenges
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Personality disorders
How Sexual Addiction Develops
Sex addiction is a progressive addiction that leads to increasingly destructive behavior. The addiction is a cycle of sexual desires being met, ensuing feelings of anxiety and depression which create the desire for coping through sex, and then satisfying those sexual desires anew. Much like a drug high, sex offers a short-term high with significant emotional tolls. As the addiction progresses the following consequences can occur:
- Profound depression
- Diminished self-worth
- Relational insensitivity, or broken, distant relationships
- Marital trouble
- Drug or alcohol use to cope with emotional pain
- Neglect of parental duties
- Sexual activity outside of a relationship
Sixty percent of sex addicts report financial problems from feeding their addictions, and almost sixty percent admit to participating in illegal activity related to their addiction. Even more have co-occurring addiction issues such as alcoholism, eating disorders, compulsive gambling or drug abuse. In situations of co-occurring addictions treatment becomes more complicated and relapse becomes more likely without professional help.
Sexual Addiction and Legal Compromise
Because sexual addiction can drain finances, addicts may resort to theft to support their addiction or to replace the money spent on the addiction. Sexual addiction can lead to serious legal consequences as addicts seek more and more stimulating sexual experiences through increasingly riskier behavior. Sex addicts are more likely to participate in masochistic behavior, voyeurism or exhibitionism or inappropriate sexual conduct with a minor or coworker.
